RC CHURCH

ECCLESIASTICAL

RADLETT, HERTS

Initial discussions with the client centred primarily around a new parish hall, however the brief developed into proposals for a two storey structure to accommodate broader parish ancillary facilities.

The sectional idea for the proposed parish centre was required to accommodate a steeply sloping site. The floor construction was beam and block and the roof was designed to be as visually open as possible to give the space the light feeling that it creates. This important conceptual aspect was achieved by incorporating four major timber trusses down the length of the hall and replacing the traditional timber lower tie beam with a steel rod; both visual and economical.

Two extensions for the Lady Chapel and the Chapel for the Blessed Sacrament were made to the side aisles of the existing church. A bright colour scheme was coordinated throughout which successfully linked the new extension to the existing church building without losing the intimate nature of this relatively modest sized church. The site's location within a conservation area meant that A+K were also required to lead inevitable negotiations with the local planning authority throughout and the project was officially opened in 2005, on time and on budget.
