A+K were approached by a commercial client to design bed and breakfast accommodation located on the car park of an existing public house.

After visiting the site, A+K were immediately aware of the importance of understanding the character of the existing site. The buildings were made up of a 19th century public house, an old barn and a more recent 1980's addition. The site had been allowed to develop ad hoc and as such the buildings had a random juxtaposition and relationship to each other.
A+K took this unique site and spent time observing and sketching, then producing drawings back in the office to fully understand its character. The result was a sensitive proposal of two cedar clad structures that would complement the scale and character of the original 19th century public house and ancillary buildings. The design was developed further through a close working relationship with the client and the local authorities and A+K successfully obtained full planning permission.
