STREATHAM

RESIDENTIAL

A+K undertook the detailed design and oversaw the construction and completion of 9 new-build flats and 8 refurbished houses to completely revitalise the old Almshouses in Streatham which provide affordable housing for single women over 60.

A+K were employed by the contractor on a Design and Build contract. The site, situated in a conservation area, contained 10 traditional almshouses around a courtyard which were in a poor state of repair, and were outdated and undersized. 8 of these were extended to the rear and refurbished throughout, whilst maintaining their original charm. This work was all undertaken with close collaboration with the local Conservation Officers.

The two new blocks to complete the courtyard were detailed with distinctive brick detailing, and a steeply pitched repeated roof module, resulting in modern buildings with a style sympathetic to their surroundings. A+K undertook the work necessary to ensure that the buildings met Secured by Design requirements, Code for Sustainable Homes level 4, BREEAM requirements, Lifetime Homes requirements, Building for Life requirements and latest building regulations, along with negotiations with the local council to approve the numerous conditions placed on the planning permission.
